Interlibrary Loan: ILL

Overview of the interlibrary loan service.

The Interlibrary Loan Process

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a means of sharing resources between libraries. ILL supplements the library collection and should be used when your needs cannot be met at Stoxen Library. ILL services are free of charge for Dickinson State University students, faculty, and staff.

Once an ILL request is made through Stoxen Library the request will be sent to lender libraries that participate in ILL. Always allow at least two weeks for materials to arrive. Electronic copies often arrive within 2-3 days, however, sometimes it may take longer than two weeks. Physical items may also take two weeks or longer depending on how long it takes to find a lender and ship the item.

Click through the tabs to learn more about the ILL process.

Items that can be requested through ILL services include (but are not limited to):

  • Books
  • Electronic copies of book chapters
  • Electronic copies of journal articles
  • DVD and VHS
  • Dissertations and Theses
  • Microfilm
  • Conference papers and proceedings.

The lending library has full discretion when deciding to lend materials. Some items may be difficult or impossible to obtain. Additionally, copyright restrictions may limit some ILL requests.

An email will be sent to your Dickinson State University email account when your requested item(s) arrive. Electronic items, such as a book chapter or journal article, will be included in the email as an attachment or as a link with a password. This will be the end of the ILL process for electronic items. If you have trouble viewing the electronic document contact Stoxen Library.

If you requested a physical item you will receive an email in your DSU email account informing you that your item has arrived and is ready to be picked up at the main information desk at Stoxen Library. Bring your DSU ID to check out the materials. Proceed to the next tab to learn about checking out and returning physical ILL items.

Remember to check your email!

You will need to pick up your ILL item at the main information desk in Stoxen Library. You will need to show your DSU ID in order to check out the item. The physical item will contain paperwork from Stoxen Library as well as the lending library. Leave all paperwork in the item and return all paperwork with the item. Turn in all ILL loan materials to a library worker and do not put ILL material into a library drop box.

If you would like to renew a physcial ILL item, send the request to dsu.library.ill@dickinsonstate.edu. Stoxen Library will contact the lending library through an automated system. The lending library has full discretion for deciding whether or not to grant the renewal. Stoxen Library will contact you through your DSU email account letting you know if the renewal request was denied or if you were given a new due date.

The due date will be written on the blue information slip inserted in the item by Stoxen Library. You are responsible for keeping track of due dates for ILL items and returning them on time. You are responsible for any late, lost, or damaged fees that are assessed by the lending library. If you request an item and it is not picked up from Stoxen Library before the due date, you may be charged for all or some of the ILL costs.
